Lower back pain can lead to the nerves that exit the spine (spinal nerves) becoming compressed (nerve impingement) or irritated. The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, or various parts of the leg and foot.

Nerve Pain & Sciatica

Sometimes problems with the spine in the neck or lower back can lead to the nerves that exit the spine (spinal nerves) becoming compressed (nerve impingement) or irritated. Nerve pain is often an extremely painful complaint.

Nerve pain can arise for a variety of reasons including inflammation around the nerve root (the place where the nerve exits the spine) or injuries to the discs in the spine, which can result in compression on these nerve roots.

One of the most common nerve pains experienced by our patients is pain down the leg. This is often caused by problems with the nerve roots that exit the spine in the lower back. Nerve symptoms include leg pain, pins and needles or numbness in certain parts of the leg and/or sometimes also weakness in the leg. These symptoms may also occur down the arm when there is nerve impingement in the neck.

There are a number of treatments for these complaints as the causes can vary in terms of severity.

In some circumstances an MRI scan may be required on the suspected injured area of the spine to further investigate the severity of the injury. If this is the case our chiropractors can either refer you privately or contact your G.P. directly.

Sciatica; - Nowadays ‘sciatica’ is a term often used to describe any kind of leg pain associated with a lower back injury. The causes of sciatica can vary from nerve injuries as described above, to a pain referral from some of the joints in the lower back.
